MODULE 18 / PRINTING & ASSEMBLY

Meet your printer & slicer

Set up a documented X2D workspace, understand the AMS and the two nozzles, and prepare a small practice print in Bambu Studio. Your first goal is a repeatable workflow you can explain.

By the end, you can…

  • Recognize the printer, filament system, plate and slicer responsibilities.
  • Select a profile matching the actual nozzle and plate.
  • Save and inspect a small project before printing.
BRING WITH YOU

A Mac, your confirmed Bambu Lab X2D and AMS 2

A compatible practice filament and the printer's supplied setup instructions

PRINTING BENCH / LAYERSOne shape. Two ways to build it.
PRINT BEDZ ↑Fewer layers · larger footprint
Exaggerated layers, not a slicer preview. Orientation changes bed contact, time, supports and strength across layers. Start the teaching tile broad face down. Structural BDX-R parts need their own orientation and load review.
01

Shape, recipe, machine

CAD describes a shape. A slicer turns that shape into layers and planned nozzle movements. The printer follows those movements while heating and pushing filament, the thin plastic strand on a spool. The AMS stores and feeds selected strands. None of these tools chooses a safe robot bracket design for you: manufacturing decisions still need a reason.

Think of a slicer project as your experiment record. It connects geometry with a printer configuration, material, orientation and process settings. Changing one of these can change the result. Saving the project lets you repeat the experiment and ask a useful troubleshooting question instead of trying to remember twenty settings.

02

Your X2D has two different material paths

The confirmed machine is X2D. Bambu documents its associated material system as AMS 2 Pro; this is the official wording used in the linked references. The left nozzle uses direct extrusion and the right uses an auxiliary Bowden path. Bambu recommends the left for main material and the right for support. Their usable areas differ: left 256 × 256 × 260 mm; right or shared area 235.5 × 256 × 256 mm.

An AMS spool slot, a project filament entry and a nozzle are three separate things. A green entry on screen is a description, not proof that green PLA is physically loaded. Trace the real spool and tube route before matching the software entries. Optional accessories can change routing; this course does not assume that a filament track switch is installed.

A printer profile tells the slicer which machine it is preparing movements for, including its usable space and nozzle arrangement. Choose the X2D profile with the nozzle configuration actually fitted to your printer. A profile for a similarly sized Bambu printer is not interchangeable just because the plate looks familiar.

03

Begin with a small, understandable result

We will use a plain practice tile, not a load-bearing robot part. This keeps failures cheap and makes the result easy to measure. The file describes a solid shape, but the slicer may fill its interior with a patterned structure. A solid CAD body does not instruct the printer to use 100% infill.

Keep fingers away from hot and moving components. Learn where Pause and Stop are before a job starts, and let the plate cool before handling it. Follow the X2D setup and plate instructions for the hardware you actually have. Automatic calibration is useful; it does not prove part strength or compensate for choosing the wrong material profile.

WORDS YOU NOW KNOW

Slicer
Software that plans a print as layers and machine movements.
Nozzle
The opening through which heated filament is deposited.
Preset
A saved collection of settings for a machine, material or printing process.
