MODULE 32 / TRAIN & EXTEND

LEDs and power budgets

Build a small indicator experiment, measure its demand and design a clean software boundary. Use lighting to explain robot state while treating the added electronics as a real engineering change.

2–4 h plus a documented bench session8 lab steps3 knowledge checks In progress

By the end, you can…

  • Create a state-to-light behavior table.
  • Measure and document accessory power requirements.
  • Plan a removable LED integration with a timing and brownout regression test.

  3. 3Power distribution
  4. 4Actuators / regulated logic

Select voltage, current ratings, wire, connectors and protective devices as one system. A high-current motor supply and logic supply have different requirements.

A conceptual architecture, not a wiring diagram. Exact supply, interfaces, pinouts and protection must be verified for the chosen hardware revision.
01

Start with meaning, then choose the light

A useful first lighting task is showing an observed state: ready, motion requested, fault latched or charging confirmed. Write the meaning before selecting colors or animations. An attractive pulse must not imply charging when software has only recognized a dock tag. The light reports the state; it does not establish that the underlying condition is true.

Keep a fault indication distinguishable without relying only on color. For example, use a consistent pattern plus text in the operator interface. A disconnected LED controller should not prevent the locomotion supervisor from stopping motion. Lighting is an accessory, not the sole stop mechanism or the source of truth about the battery.

02

Power is a budget, not just a plug

Different LED products need different supply and data levels. Record the exact pixel/controller part, allowed voltage, maximum documented load and permitted power path. The motor supply is not a generic source for logic accessories. A converter must tolerate the actual pack’s operating range and transients while providing a suitable regulated output.

Estimate first, then measure several patterns. Power is voltage multiplied by current; energy also depends on duration. Average consumption helps estimate run time, while peaks, wire losses and converter thermal limits affect reliable operation. Do not copy an example current per pixel into a different product as though it were its datasheet.

03

Keep decorative work outside the control deadline

A gait controller must receive fresh measurements and issue commands on time. LED animation can involve communication, buffering and delays. Put it behind an interface that accepts a small state message and updates independently. Do not insert a long animation loop or a blocking network request into the policy update path.

Define startup, reconnect and stale-message behavior. On a bench controller, a missing state message can produce a neutral indication. The locomotion supervisor should continue enforcing its own stop conditions. Record message age and update failures so a misleading frozen color is diagnosable.

04

Even a small accessory changes the robot

Mounts, wires, diffusers and a regulator add mass and occupy space. Check moving-joint clearance, service access and strain relief, not only whether the light fits in a rendering. Keep sharp fasteners and loose wires away from the battery and moving linkages. A removable first revision makes faults easier to isolate.

Integrate one change at a time. Verify the LED system alone, then the mounted but non-walking robot, then repeat the established baseline. A reboot when the lights brighten is a failed power integration, not a reason to lower the test’s expectations. Preserve the original harness and configuration so the accessory can be removed for comparison.

WORDS YOU NOW KNOW

Power budget
A record of expected and measured demand compared with the system’s limits.
Brownout
Supply voltage falling low enough to disrupt electronics.
Non-blocking interface
An interface that lets critical work continue while an accessory updates.
Regression test
Repeating established checks after a change.
